It will save time - otherwise, you will probably get 80% of the way through the migration process, they will forget to do something straightforward, and you'll be back to square one because it will have expired anyway.
Mate of mine took his clearance details to them last year, in person. Five weeks later, there was no progress, so he went and asked them again. Turned out that the person in the clearance office that he gave the form to, didn't know how to handle a clearance migration, so just put his forms in her in tray and did nothing with them.
By which time, the clearance had expiredComment

Just get the security officer to extract a digit and get the process running.

I've heard of someone failing DV, the guy in question said it was because he had a German wife but I find that hard to believe, I'm not sure if they disclose the reason if you fail?
Generally people don't ask to have their past raked up if they have something to hide so you've got to be fairly confident before being put through it.Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave JohnsonComment

just asking as im about to go through applying,
I defaulted on a loan during a bank account move 4 years ago and the Direct debit wasnt moved over, that and my credit score wasnt the best in the world during student years but its all cleared up and paid off now, have never been bankrupt, have the usual (well not so unsual) few points on my licence but other than that nothing i can think of that may red flag things so am fairly confident but thought id check with the masses first. The proud owner of 125 Xeno Geek PointsComment
