In the western world religion no longer runs most of things and their dogmas almost have no effect on progress - perhaps Islam is just a young religion and just like Christianity in its time had Crusades they have jihad.

Religion has no place in 21st century.

You really are clueless at times. If it wasn't for Jesus man would not have reached the moon. Many try to deny the relationship, but a sensible person would give credit where credit was due.

And then one asks what were the crusades about if not trying to push back invaders following some new religion?

The combination of Hellenistic rationality with Hebrew faith "Give unto Caeser" etc. which led to the promotion of the sciences and arts giving us in the west the scientific method as opposed to the rhetoric of other traditions.

If by Jesus you mean Wernher von Braun then you are right.

Anyway, during the dark ages religion played some positive role when it came to development of sciences (all those monks making beer etc), but now they are a drag on progress - especially backwards religions that use violence against those who don't want to follow their dogmas.

a mate of mine has a t-shirt with the logo (large letters, white on black) "Christiany is Stupid."

he gets quite a lot of grief about it despite the obvious accuracy of the statement. As far as I'm concerned, the garment should be burned and reproduced with the word "Religion" replacing "Christianity".

              Amen.

a lad at my uni turned up for his final year exams with a newly shaven mohican haircut and a bright yellow t-shirt reading "only God can judge me".
He was given a talking to from the invigilator, but thankfully allowed to sit the exam. Wouldn't be surprised if the uni would ban him these days.
he was a bit of a smart arse anyway

Eh? Islam just another Abrahmic faith, like Christianity or Judaism, they all agree, for example that Jesus existed - they just differ on views of his importance. Islam is therefore hardly a "young religion" - it's roughly the same age as the others :-)

judaism dates back about 4000 years, christianity about 2000 years, islam about 1400 years

Wheh Christianity was as young as that it engaged into Crusades.

It does not matter anyway - religion has no place in the 21st century, frankly if it's illegal to sell smokes to under 16, then it should be illegal to teach religion to anyone who reaches the age when that person can make decision whether to believe in it or not. Before that this person should be well educated and only then take a bite at this religion thing.
