Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

                  IBM RPG
That brings back scary memories of something which went horribly wrong.

I first got in to programming at home, with my humble Atari 400 and BASIC when I was about 12.

I then moved up to an Atari 520STFM and STOS when I was about 19.

At that time, I was writing a lot of utilities for D&D. I worked as a progress chaser for Fords.

I remember applying for an internal job as an "RPG Programmer", and I got pretty excited.

I couldn't work out how a D&D Character Generation Program in Basic would factor in to making motor cars, but then again, it was not my job to tell fords what they wanted or not, so I applied for the role.

It was an interesting interview to say the least.

Interviewer : "So what's your experience with RPG?"

Me : "Well, naturally I play the system and I have a L12 Elven Wizard. This gives me a very good appreciation of how to translate the mechanics of the system in to an RPG program which is what I assume you are looking for."

                  Interviewer : "Duh ?"

Me : "Well, RPG is a language designed for role-playing systems, of which I have written my own programs in STOS, which could be ported across if you are interested. I've written dice-rollers, weather generators, even random dungeon generators."

                  Interviewer : "Duh ?"

Me : "So, as you can see, I'm pretty clued up on this RPG malarkey and I have plenty of experience to get stuck in."

It all ended there, and ever since, I'd always been deeply suspicious of acronymns.
