        I thought school maths has moved on from the days when kids chanted their times tables in class and were expected to work out sums in their heads (with the help of their fingers) and using a calculator was regarded as cheating during tests or exams.

          Yes interesting point. Idiot savants can usually do fast mental arithmetic but are crap in maths.
