Mine does too, but we manage to get 5-6 bags of shopping on the bus for about 4 stops.
So you just want a car to do the supermarket shopping? I think at Waitrose you can rummage and browse, buy everything then they'll deliver it for you. You do live near a Waitrose don't you?
I'm usually an Option 1 man but trying Option 4 at the moment, bought a 1 year old Mondeo and intend running it into the ground ie. it will be an Option 1 in 10 years time. Theory is the worst depreciation is out of the way and I get a few 'luxury' years before it's a run of the mill heap.

I propose another option for you then. Stay as you are but use http://www.easycar.com/ on your usual shopping day. With prices from £15/day that is probably no more expensive than a taxi.
