Although Clarkson is often a breath of fresh air and reason I don't think he's an expert on nuclear fusion? So I wouldn’t be too quick to put someone in power who seems so nonchalant about the countries safety.
…oh hang on a minute.
I thought he was agreeing with current government policy?
It's all about the price of oil - once it hits the $ 100 mark, then other options become available, like coal which was previously deemed uneconomical. It will also open up other potentially viable oil fields (eg in the North Sea/Norway and even in the Med/Cyprus-Egypt triangle).
I agree with the turbines - load of hot air! The nuclear issue is another thing though, as it will certainly provide cheaper energy but at what cost too? To build and maintain nuclear reactors to the highest safety standards is not cheap and the main players like EDF, E.ON, etc have said they are willing to invest if the Gov't is willing to guarante their loans, a bit like NR. Nuclear industry is so far state-owned for that reason.

Worrying isn't it?
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson
Fission, old chap, fission... you hu-mans haven't got the fusion plants past the concept stage so far.
I'd like to point out at this stage I am not a nuclear fission expert either.
