I spend very little as the other half spends on herself enough for the both of us. She has recently - during the christmas headless chicken run - put the account back into the red. So now I'm skint and I've nothing to show for it. I also have no idea what the wife bought and she keeps it hidden from me (and herself) in the trunk of the car.

My 8 months of contracting so far have seen me paying off nearly all the debts i have in this world ... in addition they have seen a christmas that incurred no debt and the purchase of a very quick german car for cash, that costs silly insurance and drinks petrol like its going out of fashion.
I do though, live in rented accomodation in a nice area - and have no mouths to feed or wives to finance ..... So at the moment its a great lifestyle.
Ive promised myself a nice watch this year, and a car upgrade
We live a blessed lifestyle compared to alot of people eh!Comment

I spend my money on time off work. Gizmos and nick nacks you don't need are nothing compared to freedom away from the meaningless nonsense that is 'the office'.Comment

I think all contractors go on a bit of a splurge during their first year, if they've suddently got more cash than they were used to having before.
I know I did. The problems really set in when they don't stop and carry on spending money during subseqeunt years as fast as it comes in, as if they've won the lotto with six months to live. Then an economic downturn bites and they realise they've got nothing left put by and have to sell the car and put the Omega on e-bay to pay the rent.
Enjoy your watch and car upgrade, but then think seriously about what to do with any further cash you make in years to come and put it into proper investments and longer term rainy day accounts. By that time the novelty of owning all those glitzy toys you never dreamed you would own should have worn off.Comment

Completely agree with making hay while the sun shines - but paying off my debts incurred as a permie is doing that! (Albeit starting from a negative initial balance!).
.... Im actually quite frugal apart from having a nice car - i refuse to buy a house or blow cash on the usual things people do, but i sure dont want to spend the years when i DONT have other people to worry about, living it like a monk
I'd say paying off 15k of debt inside of 8 months is pretty good going as far as being sensible is concernedComment
