I don't do Coke, so that can't be the reason I post on CUK

Nevertheless, quite a few of us are hooked on this topic already and on the CUK forum in general. Perhaps we should start a thread about forum addiction.

I don't think I would be classified as an addict though. I haven't posted enough. I would be regarded as a recreational poster - which is far cooler.

Sally Anne and Gonzo are spot on.

Teenagers will dabble with illegal substances (hate the broad brush term 'drug' as it covers too wide a spectrum from caffeine to aspirin to antimalarials, alcohol, through dope right up to the biggies like crack, meth, pcp and heroin). I did and my father did and much as I don't particularly like the thought, my son probably will if he's in anything above the 'dweeb' social set at school purely through peer pressure.

If you tell kids that 'drugs' will instantly kill them or turn them into junkie crack whores you lose all credibility. Much better to explain the pros and cons of all the various flavours and risks associated (from costing you £20 in jaffa cakes at four in the morning on dope to the obvious dangers of addiction with crack and heroin and the very real danger you can put yourself in with incapacitants like rohypnol and ketamine).

Sure I've fallen out of touch with friends who became drug-bores but I know plenty of people (and parents) who enjoy the odd social toke and nosefull no problem at all. More have probably developed drinking habits that are likely to cause them more problems than anything else.

On a final note I'd say that when I went to Uni it was those who came from the more puritancal backgrounds that were most likely to go completely off the rails on booze, drugs and sex. We had a vicar's daughter on our course who came out of her shell quite spectacularly (a story for another day - luckily I got in there quite early doors).

You are right. You don't tell kids that drugs will instantly kill them or turn them into junkies because you will lose all credibility.

You tell them that drugs are potentially dangerous and because they are illegal you don't and can't permit them as a result - even recreationally.

If you don't do that then you have already lost all credibility. How can you be credible and encourage illegal behaviour?

We didn’t get or need parental advice on drugs. As kids we were let loose to do as we pleased, within limits, and learnt risk assessment for ourselves, though discipline was set pretty high. So we were instinctively ready for dodgy or off the wall stuff early on. Halving a parent tell us not to do drugs would have been like a discussion on not sticking ones head in blender, and wouldn’t have happened. To my knowledge the only one of four siblings that has tried drugs is my sister, and that was hashish/weed when she was in her late teens.

I don't think discussion was ever about volunteering scary information to kids who aren't even interested in drugs just for the sake of it. I agree that that would be a mistake. Why arouse curiosity about them or fear of their effects for the sake of it if a child shows no interest in them anyway? I'm sure schools normally inform kids about the dangers of drugs these days as part of their lessons (although they didn't when I was at school).

Sandy's original problem was very different though as her daughter's friend was already using drugs and needed advice on how to handle a dilemma her daughter was facing.

please ingnore the following side effects

Cocaine in all its forms stimulates the central nervous system. It causes the heart to beat
more rapidly and blood vessels to constrict. This results in the demand for a greater
supply of blood. But the narrowed blood vessels are unable to deliver the volume of
blood demanded, which significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular incidents or
                  strokes
. Initially, use of these drugs reduces appetite and makes the user feel more
alert, energetic, and self-confident—even more powerful.
With high doses, users can become delusional, paranoid, and even suffer acute toxic
psychosis. Blood pressure increases, which can cause strokes or heart attacks. In some
cases these effects have proven fatal. As the drug’s effects wear off, a depression (often
called a "crash") can set in, leaving the user feeling fatigued, jumpy, fearful, and anxious.

                  Paying the Price of Cocaine
A broad range of consequences include:
                  Dependence and addiction
                  • Cardiovascular problems, including irregular heartbeat, heart
                  attack, and heart failure
                  • Neurological incidents, including strokes, seizures, fungal brain
infections, and hemorrhaging in tissue surrounding the brain
                  • Pulmonary effects, such as fluid in the lungs, aggravation of
asthma and other lung disorders, and respiratory failure
                  • Psychiatric complications, including psychosis, paranoia,
                  depression, anxiety disorders, and delusions
                  • Other effects include: sleeplessness, sexual dysfunction,
diminished sense of smell, perforated nasal septum, nausea, and
                  headaches.
Fetal cocaine effects include premature separation of the
placenta, spontaneous abortion, premature labor, low birthweight
and head circumference at birth, greater chance of visual
impairment, mental retardation, genitourinary malformations, and
                  greater chance of developmental problems.

                  • For intravenous (IV) cocaine users, there is increased risk of
                  hepatitis, HIV infection, and endocarditis.
You can also attribute most of these effects to Larium, a drug freely available on prescription used to combat malaria (less so these days now the effects are know).
