There is a big difference in someone you know dying and the Diana hysteria.

Well we all knew Diana, the only reasonable justification for sadness would be your offspring & then on a sliding scale your immediate family (but we all expect our Mothers & Fathers to go before us anyway in the natural order of things).

Colleagues / friends / acquaintances are all just flotsam on the road of life

I grieved at my mum’s funeral but I always expected her to die at some time, I expect my kids to grieve at my funeral as they have been made aware from an early age that we all have to die, but I expect them to put it into the context of a life rather than the defining moment of my existence
