    EU Constitution

David Millband has signed the new EU treaty as a representitive of the people of Britain. Gordon Brown is flying to Lisbon later.

The decision to sign the treaty was based on a referendum held last summer where an overwhelming majority of the population of the UK voted in favour of signing it.

Gordon Brown praised the referendum as a stellar example of "democracy in action" and added that "states and government who try to sidestep due democratic process on technicalities" are treating their own people with utter contempt.

democracy in action? the governments do an end run around a constitution and necessary referendums?...'course they probably knew all along that wouldn't work..so this was the end game.

Well its all said and done..like the previous poster...who cares as long as I can afford a annual 2 day holiday and eventually retire at the age of 82.

Brown seems to be rather cowardly person.

It's got to get through parliament yet. I've a feeling it might be a rocky ride.

Was this the referendum that was held while I was asleep for 1 second?

Only Ireland has a referendum. If Ireland says 'No' it's back to the drawing board for the Amended Amended Treaty.

I doubt it - remember The Nice Treaty Ireland voted NO. Then they had to have another referendum.
