Not a great expert on football (unlike some here), but I think the main problem that any England manager faces is how to motivate 15-20 multi-millionaires that can't be bothered to put a decent performance when they put the England shirt. Look at Gerrard, truly awful against Croatia on that Wednesday, played his best game despite being booed off at Newcastle the following Saturday.
I read that most of the Croatian players were earning in a year what most of the England players earn in a month - obviously motivation has got nothing to do with money.

Beckham WAS a great crosser. He hasn't been for a long time. Half of them don't get past the first defender.

The only reason he gets any success these days is because he takes every single dead-ball kick that we get in the opposition half, and so by law of averages...

Mind you, his cross for Crouch's goal against Croatia was superb.

I was reading something by Paul Ince recently (now a demi-god down my way, but we'll let that go), and he says the problem with England's squad is not the lack of quality, but the lack of leaders on the pitch.

Good sides have at least four in the team who can drag a side up and change a game. At Euro 96 he said we had Seaman, Pearce, Adams, Ince himself, Sherringham and Shearer, all strong personalities who knew what to do (except take penalties of course, but we'll let that go as well. )

Similar in 1998. He says now we only have Terry, and when he's missing, no-one. I'd add Gary Neville but he's been injured for ages and may never play for England again.

Yeah read that too. Element of truth in it - if you ignore Incey's self promotion. Also Beckenbauer says the the same thing - and that's a bloke I respect in footy.
