I only use the online facility to declare SORN - if I need a tax disc then I go to our local PO in the village. I've heard of people who have bought their discs online and they've got lost in the post or wherever, then you end up being stuck without a tax disc...

Unfortunately loads of little post offices don't sell car tax anymore. In fact if you go to into many sub post offices there is normally a sign listing all the stuff they don't do.

It's all part of the government plan to close down as many post offices as possible.

I'm not sure I understand the relationship between the sub post office and the central PO. My understanding is these sub post offices are franchises and are independant business people. They are not subsidised in anyway?

Government in its current form is crap ain't it? I watched something last night on motorways. Apparently the public inquiries they have are just show. The decision has already been made. Pretty well sums up the democracy we have.

        Anyone for musharraf instead?

          Sub post offices are subsidised.

The Post Office has 14,300 branches but only run 550 themselves.

"Generally, subpostmasters receive a fixed payment from Post Office Ltd, this is topped up by a variable payment based on the number of transactions they carry out."

Sub PO's are not franchises but run along the same principles as the main PO's.

All Sub-postmasters are given a salary based on the products and svcs they offer.

Years ago, selling road tax used to be a nice little earner for a Sub PO but now, this restricted to only a few PO's in any geographical area.

Managed to get this yesterday. wheee. The post office accepted my V5 and the rest. I am now legal.

Could someone tell me why obtaining road tax - the american equivalent of registration renewal - costs four times more than in america? All that it appears to fund is road markings which you can't see in rain and the random creation of mini-roundabouts.
