That's the whole point of knoxk-out rounds - to weed out the teams with NO chance of winning against quality competition.
    It's Deja-vu all over again!

That sounds like a very competent decision to me.

Greed is usually the opposite of competence.

His salary package should have been £1 pa, and he gets to real money only after reaching quarter finals with real pay-off for the win in final.

          Graham Taylor anyone?
Nice to see a bit of considered thought amongst the reactionary dross.

Root and branch, it's the only solution. I thought it would be obvious even to the lowliest numpty by now that swapping managers every few years hasn't worked.

It's a pretty numpty sport at all levels in England. Chief Numpty Brian Barwick who appointed Numpty McClaren is in charge of the 'Root and branch' reform to work out what went wrong !!!

We will never have a decent team aslong as footballers are trained from a young age to look to the touchline as soon as something goes slighty wrong. We haven't had a leader on the pitch for years and we've been tulip for years.

What a total shambles and the - we're out, no given a miracle last chance, no we've blown it again has been painful.
Easy with hindsight but really :
Scott Carson - rabbit in headlights, experience of James surely worth a punt.
Pitch - absolute disgrace, same for both teams but still shocking (why doesn't the 1 billion quid stadium have a full roof or potential for temporary cover ???)
Players - out of their depth, it's clear against any kind of quality that we need our absolute best team to get anywhere close !
Crouch - did everything asked in a team setup for him to fail.

Worst thing - all the excitement and buildup and games next summer and we miss out on the lot. When you are in the tournament, lots of the other games are interesting, now - they just aren't, chuck it on sky and don't bother showing them on terrestrial.

Most teams (national as well as local) have their best success when stability and consistency have been applied both in the playing staff and in management.
Man Utd have been top of their game for decades now due to this philosophy.
Liverpool had their best years when they appointed team managers/coaches etc from within the existing staff rather than import from outside.

Having the most money and hence the best players might have something to do with it also.

Money helps, but Ferguson built his initial success at MU by immediately instating a good youth set-up. Just as he had done at St Mirren and Aberdeen prior to his arrival at Manchester. From the Aberdeen days he produced the likes of McLeish, Strachan, and Mark McGhee who have all progressed on through the game to management. At Man U he produced the Nevilles, Giggs, Butt, Beckham, Scholes etc. and admittedly has enhanced that nucleus with spending cash.
Ths Scots were forced down the route of promoting youth early and it has paid off handsomely both at Club level where both of the Old Firm are holding their own in the CL with a good core of Scottish youngsters, and at national level. That transformation has occurred in quite a short space of time too.
However, as long as the Premiership is awash with cash and buying in foreigners is seen as a quick fix, the young english players are unlikely to be blooded early enough to make the same progress.
