May I assure you that squirrels and cats are not natural allies.

Why can't cats just chew their nails, like humans?

        Agree.

However if you want to stay in the Mrs good books then you want to get a couple of 'plague rats'. Sally has some 'interesting' recipe books as well

My question is this; short of zapping them with a cattle-prod, how can I disuade them from clawing the wallpaper. Does anyone know of a non-toxic (and preferably odourless to humans) agent that I could spray on the targetted areas? I'm getting a bit fed up of being woken at 5 a.m. to the sound of shredding anaglypta.
Do they do it when you're awake too?
Get a cheap water pistol and spray them every time they do it. Its harmless for the cats but they hate it and soon learn!
Added bonus that water is odourless and nontoxic

Me former cat - my wife has given it away because it was afraid of the baby - shredded carpet, leather settee, walls and doors. I would suggest a scratching post and squirt water if you see them scratching elsewhere.
If the cats are to stay indoors at all times - have them declawed.

How do you know it's the cat's that are scratching the wallpaper, were you in the room when they did it?

Quite simply, you can't. But on the upside, Cattle prods are nowhere near as expensive as you might imagine

They've got several. We even sprayed one with catnip to encourage them to use it.

Yes, as I said, they wake me up.

Trouble is, it's dark at 5am, but you're right they do hate it (we use that to warn them away from Mrs. W's budgies). So maybe I'll try it upstairs too.

Thanks for the suggestions (oh, and wendigo100, spot on! ).

But was this observed in a controlled environment? It could be the kids, how can you be sure its the cats?
