Technically speaking as long as you use the same order for both ends the cable will work.
From a practical point of view you want to stick with the standard layout and have the pairs (it is twisted pair after all and not twisted cable) correct. It will improve the signal slightly and will make it easier to repeat the process each time.

Get a tester from PC world use it but don't mark it and then just take it back within 28 days, I've used their hire service on many occasions.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

Fluke do some very nice ones, if a bit pricey.

            well it's like this,

using a process of elimination I have proved that you MUST get the cable sequence correct according to the spec otherwise the data won't be carried and a connection won't be made

this means I have to remove the 28 rj45's down by the switch and redo them

I have one rj45 type face plate and no matter how much I try I cannot get it to work, on the same cable coming out of the wall if I remove the face plate and put an rj45 on the end and then a router and then a fly lead to the pc all works fine, but no matter how I connect the face place to put an rj45 from the pc into it it doesn't work, strange, I'll buy some more face plates from a different company and give them a try

therefore currently one room is connected up to the central switch and in the room the is a cable coming out of the wall with an rj45 on the end and a router inbetween it and the pc next step is to try the face place solution with a different bland of face plate

we'll get there in the end and maybe this could become a plan c setting up this crap and satellite installations for those buggers too lazy to have a go themselves

Thanks for all help so far

I ordered the sat multiswitch, 5 in 12 out, fingers crossed the lnb is a quattro and not a quad - we'll see

will it be worth motorising the astra/hotbird dish ? that one will have three x quad lnb's with cables already going from the site of the dish to each room

this stuff is better than a trainset
