287 in a front wheel drive car is mad

my mates got 304BHP coming out of his MK5 Golf GTI Edition 30 and thats front wheel drive too!!!!

Its not as bad as it may seem. I hardly get wheel spin - only get it sometimes when i put my foot down hard from standing start.

I've heard of someone on another forum who supercharged his Type-r and it puts out over 400bhp, he admits you can't put it all down on twisty roads but he's shocked a few 911 drivers on the motorway.

My usual preference is for Focus-sized hatchbacks, but I was semi-retiring and expecting to be doing very low annual mileage, so was in the market for something luxurious on which someone else had already paid the majority of the depreciation. High mileage wasn't an issue for me if it made the car cheaper. The cheapness of this car was enhanced by the manufacturer going bust 6 months before I bought it. It's costing me less than £100 a month in depreciation, in exchange for which I get

• Burgundy red metallic paintwork, with lots of chrome trim, on a shapely retro-style body
• Cream (OK beige) leather seats, electrically adjustable, with memory, heated
• matching leather-covered steering wheel with built-in controls for sound-system and cruise control
• Two tone interior, beige and black with black piping on the seats
• Retro white dials with ghostly orange backlight
• 2-litre BMW diesel engine
• 5-speed automatic gear box
• Climate Control (the thing that most exceeded expectations, will never buy another car without it.)
• Cruise Control (used all the time, to comply with speed limits.)
• 6 CD-changer
• Phone Kit (for which I was forced to buy my first mobile so that it wouldn't be a useless eyesore.)
• An electric rear blind (which I never use, but I like to show it off to visiting family.)
• Rain sensitive wipers (first time I've had this, like it.)
• Rear parking sensor (was looking forward to this, thought it would help me get within three to six inches, but it is useless, goes ballistic at about 2 feet, which I can reach without its help.)

Those who routinely spend lots on cars will laugh at my enthusiasm for a Rover, but I reckon I'm getting an awful lot for £100 a month.
