What smokers could be expected to pay for a permit to buy cigarettes. A Government advisor has suggested a scheme to “register addicts” and allow them to smoke if their health is not under “massive risk”.

The alcohol permit to allow you to drink is going to be £1000 pa.

This is not another stealth tax, it is a permit. It's for your own protection.

        Nanny knows best.

Quite why they think that the ciggi smugglers are going to bother checking that their customers have a permit is beyond me.

I don't think it's a stealth tax, but you should need a permit (for free) to buy cigarettes.

And then in 15 years time, when you now have a list of smokers, you stop them getting free treatment on the NHS for smoking-related illnesses.
