I'm thinking it could have been some crap in the fuel line which has now cleared ? - any thoughts ?

Typical - the user can't get the problem to re-manifest itself

    It could have been overheating?

The odd thing is not losing revs, but losing power, that would sound like the clutch if the light hadn't come on.

Knowing French cars, the engine management sensor has probably gone. Get one from a breakers yard to test it. Or pay Peugeot all your money.
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

I'll give you car trouble, two separate occasions this weekend some useless **** has driven into my parked car.

**** number 1 only managed to hit the wing mirror and leave a line of rubber along the door.

**** number 2 left a massive dent in the rear wheel arch and loads of paint.

Neither incident was on CCTV. Neither **** left a note. *****.
You should see what your heap has done to the front of my car you ****!

I mean, oh no, that's terrible, who could have done such a thing?

Here's one I found on t'net...sounds like good advice...

it sounds like it has gone into limp home mode. The Cars computer (ECU) has picked up a fault through one of the sensors and is limiting the power output of the engine so you may only do 20mph and "limp home" to a dealer. Cars made in the last few years or so have electronicaly controlled throttles (fly by wire) and the ECU can override your right foot in order to limit engine power hence protecting the engine from serious damage. Also, the ECU may shut down one of the cylinders to limit power but this may give you the symptom of a missfire caused by old spark plugs. With the right diagnostic equipment, a reputable dealer can extract the "fault codes" logged in the ECU. You should ask to see a computer printout of the diagnostic equipment results. Small garages would probably not have this equipment so you should go to a main dealer to get this done. Even so, you should not expect to pay more than £100 for the diagnostic service. Also, make sure they contact you before billing you a few £hundred for a sensor!

Seems like a common thing for the 306:

were you low on fuel at time or had recently run the tank low?

A peugeot 306 doesn't have fly by wire!

If the sensor itself isn't the fault, the warning sensor will store a code in the ECU which tells you the fault, you can either get the code out yourself using a bit of DIY or Pay someone (mobile diagnostic for example) about £50 to retrieve the code.

                    Sorry - just joking!!

I would tend to agree with the limp home mode kicking in. The only things is I wouldn't expect it to keep revving though, the limp home mode is there to protect the engine in case of a problem.

I suspect the only way to find out for sure is to take it to the garage - there could be so many possibilities.

Er, of course that's the obvious solution, but the OP wanted to avoid that.
