    Winston,

I've asked you before to calm down.

Go and harass Shaun or Threaded or Sasguru if you are bored.

You know what I say is true and have confirmed such many times in the past.

    Milan.

Ok, do you think that we should, just for the sake of spite, have NL remain in power and cause the country more suffering?

I for one don't and the sooner we have chance to get rid of the red scum, the better!

So where is the money going to come from to allow them to do this? They have to replace the money that comes in somehow...

This is another bribery tactic to woo voters...Cameron is such a muppet!!!

          Foreign millionaires. Genius.

Hmm, 9 million families to benefit, bigger numbers than I thought. Even remotely affluent left leaning people will be tempted to overturn their social guilt complex when its their own kid's future at stake. Its going to be a form of pension safety net for millions of people, so the government will also claw some savings there in the longer term.

It's a key divider between the parties - personal responsibility vs state control. Squirrels vs parasites.

            granted and agreed

you must also agree that the incumbents are going to be saddled with fixing the mess and NL as opposition will be blaming the incumbents for all problems

I am all for getting these tax and waste, reduce everyone to the same low standard b*stards out and if this helps then great. Cons have been clever with this one, there is a fear and loathing of this tax that bears little resemblance to the actual threat.
              1. This is an avoidable tax for many households, only 6% currently pay it. Wills can be changed after death, trusts etc and people are clued up to it now and I bet the take has been going down because of that. I expect the will changing will be squashed if the cons do get in.
              2. House prices are now going more or less sideways meaning less people jumping over these thresholds.
              3. The shortfall will be met by people to whom 25k is the quarterly bar bill 'at the club'.

Yes, clear blue water between the high tax, high waste Labour government. Savings can be made by the Tories just by reducing wasted spending...how about starting with the billions lost in overpaid tax credit errors each year.

Remember, the Tories under Thatcher reduced the top rate tax from 60% to 40% in 1980(thereabouts) which resulted in more revenue for the exchequer. The Tories have always been the 'value for money' party IMHO.

That's a fictional number made up from the number of homes currently worth more than the threshold. But it (conveniently) ignores the fact that many of these home will have mortgages on them taking the amount that the owner actually 'owns' down to much less than the limit. It also ignore the possibility that many people will spend/give away their accumulated wealth during their retirement and will actually die owning far less than this.

But this number wasn't made up by the Tories, but by someone else. Helpfully, it has already been doing the rounds in the press under emotive headlines such as "9 million families face inheritance penury", so the populace believes it is the true figure and that IHT will affect them badly, even if that is a load of horse manure.

It still affects them. They know that they might die early, in a car accident or something, and the thought of the government slicing many tens of thousands of pounds from their estate - that they have already paid tax on - is not pleasant.

It's similar to knowing your local hospital is run by muppets - it probably won't affect you but if you need it you're fooked.

According to the interview on R4 they are planning a flat £25,000 charge on those who regeister as non-domiciled for tax purposes with the intent that this will pay for the IHT changes.
