Living in London city

Hi All,

I'm thinking about moving in from the 'burbs into the city (near Barbican or Moorgate). Does anyone have any experience? What's it like?

I've never lived that far in, but any visit to the City (or Docklands for that matter) on weekends has meant empty streets and not much happening. Compare that with anywhere west of Holborn.

I know someone that used to live at the Barbican (about 10 years ago) and absolutely loved the location.

I can't think where your nearest things like supermarkets that will be open at the weekend would be though.

EDIT. OK a quick search tells me that there is a Waitrose right there.

I know people who have lived in Clerkenwell which is near enough the city but still has some life at the weekend.

Excellent location

I used to live in Shoreditch and work in the City - know the Barbican well as I had a friend living there.
I would have no hesitation living there. The Barbican has it's own arts complex and cinema. True it's a bit quiet at the weekend but you're a couple of stops from Shoreditch and Clerkenwell which are lively plus if you do go west you're so central it's a doddle by tube, bus or cab.

Going back more than 20 years here, but a lot of pubs and restaurants were closed in the evening and at weekends. If that concerns you, check it out.

Dull, grey, over-priced, plenty of crime, no community feeling. Go to live in a proper area where there are real people and not saddos like sasguru who spend most of their time counting money that they never use.

Expensive. Even in the Southern End of the Socialist Republic of Hackney you are looking at > 300K for a 2 bedrooom apartment, no en-suite Bathroom.

Back when apartments their were setting you back 120K around the city you were looking at £240K. So over say a 30 minute walk you are looking at double the price.
