Diver is right. Before India became British in the 17-18th centry, it accounted for 25% of world output. When we left in 1947 it was a basket case. What's happening now is only them getting back to their real state. And yes we live in global world and we have to cope with it. No point in being a luddite.Hard Brexit now!

Note: The exploitation was done by the Royal Family, government ministers and owners of large companies. The workers from ALL countries were exploited.
Note: Today it is the government ministers and large companies who are actively encouraging immigration to the UK in order to cut wage costs. Again it is the workers of all countries that are being exploited.
It is government propaganda that makes the population feel guilty and makes them, (us) pay for the governments past sins.
If anyone thinks that we have a duty to hand out work visas as compensation for the past behaviour of out government then they are thick.
The next generation will be handing out compensation for the ills that our government have committed in Iraq."A people that elect corrupt politicians, imposters, thieves and traitors are not victims, but accomplices," George OrwellComment

No longer face the starvation and hardship. Well you must have a sheltered life. There are thousands of pensioners who can’t afford basic necessities and can’t afford to feed themselves properly.
Millions of people in the UK died in factors, mines, shipping and World War One which was fighting about carving up empires from three royal cousins.
I am sure that the average Joe would be better off today if we had not had an empire. Take a look at Switzerland and Norway."A people that elect corrupt politicians, imposters, thieves and traitors are not victims, but accomplices," George OrwellComment

The pension is sufficient to live on comfortably.
My mother is a pensioner and holidays once a year abroad. she has only a state pension and manages quite well, and can't understand why other pensioners do not.
As for your second argument about people dying in factories etc, and ww1, what has that got to do with it?
People were dying of starvation and disease and war, and work related deaths long before Britain became an empire.
As for Switzerland, they have funded most of the wars and expeditions that have formed these empires.
Norway and Switzerland have become wealthy on the backs of the developed countries that developed because of the rape and pillage (collonisation) of these third world countries

Obviously the office for national statistics are wrong and you are right.
"excess winter deaths", and attempt to show the extent to which cold winter weather and illness lead to more deaths in he winter than in the Summer. Whilst some much colder countries (such as Finland) do not see much increase in death rates during the Winter, Britain has a history of high rates of Winter deaths.
The new figures for 1999/2000 show that nationwide there were nearly 55,000 excess winter deaths, almost all of which were among pensioners. This is up around 6% on the previous year and is the highest figure since the mid-1970s.
The figure for the London region is 6,030 an increase of over 22% on the previous Winter, and the fastest rise for any region. Out of the 6,030 "excess" deaths in London, 2,160 were pensioners over the age of 85 and another 1,690 were aged 75-84.
Norway had more than double economic output per person than the UK in the 50s and 60s prior to North Sea Oil"A people that elect corrupt politicians, imposters, thieves and traitors are not victims, but accomplices," George OrwellComment

The only statistics that I have found after a quick search is that:
In 1960 the UK GDP per person was 70% of the US GDP per person, compared to Norway's 60%
In 1995 the UK GDP per person was 62% of the US GDP per person, compared with Norway's 80%
So in 35 years Norwegians went from earning 85% of the average brit to earning 132% of the average brit.*
I didn't do very well at statistics at university so I will accept a challenge on the logic.
