How do you decide who's responsible enough to own a dangerous dog and who isn't?
Surely prevention is better than an after cure?
Agreed. I like dogs and have owned a couple.
The arguement for dogs and pens being of the same lethality is similar to the U.S. National Rifle Association's age-old saw of, "There's no such thing as a dangerous gun; it's only the person holding it that can be a danger". That "freedom-enshrining" idea sounds a bit less brilliant when a nutter gets hold of a semi-automatic and pays a visit to the local school, etc.
It's when control is no longer there that this sort of phoney liberalism loses all of its credibility.
That is the key phrase. It is not for the government or others to legislate what at root cause is a decision made by an individual.
You own a dog, you're responsible for its and your actions.
End of.
Agreed. But the whole point is that Dublin City Council have banned the keeping of certain breeds. They have, I suppose, found that trusting the good folk of Dublin to be responsible has, in some cases, backfired nastily. Same everywhere.
