Bristol airport was re-surfaced a few months ago and Easyjet refused to use it until grooves were put in place which surprised me as BA were still using it, is ‘grooving’ a common method of drainage on runways?

Very common, Not specifically for drainage as such, more to improve traction, tyre grip and braking, with the added benefit of some directional stability.
