They will tell you that you are talking out of your arse (which you are).

There are many areas where people are legally required to take, and keep, copies of people's authenticating documentation (which will usually be their passport).

The only issue here is whether this is one of them. IMHO it is, that fact that other agencies don't do it, doesn't change that.

one agency asked me for a photo last year - but it was after I started, they wanted the photo for opt in paper processing along with ID etc

Hang on a mo. Did they ask for a passposrt photo or a copy of the page with your photo?

Related to all this is 'why'? Lets say you do send a copy of your passport by fax I assume or an email attachment. How does that prove to anybody, like the agent or client or uncle Tom Cobbly that your identity is related to that 'passport'? It could be just anybody's passport, no?

The agent has not seen you in person have they? Have I got this wrong and it is a temp agency down the road and you turn up in person and 'show' them your passposrt? Otherwise I don't see what it proves and just gives out personal information about yourself that could go astray.

Ok, fair enough but he did not say that was the process. Whenever I have (stupidly in the past ) done this there was not expectation of any approval/varification of the copy. Anyway what is to stop you forging that as well? In all my 12 years in dealing with agents I never set foot on their premises so it was all done remotely. I still don't see how you can prove who you are without seeing the original documents (as when you apply for a passport). Then when you use the passport the picture must match the person holding it, right? If you send an agent the originals you still never meet them face to face, only the client gets to see your pretty face.

OK - the agent has visited the client - he saw the PM / HR when he gathered their recruitment requirements, HR/PM saw me and interviewed me, therefore they are able to varify that the photo in my driving license/passport is really me. But as I said this agent waited till after I got the gig (but think he was kinda laid back about the paper work)

Which seems to me to say that they can have a copy if you consent.

And if you don't consent they don't do business wth you.

There's nothing to say that making a photocopy is illegal (and photocopying doesn't count as "reproduce")
