There was a statistic on the BBC site the other day which said:
In Britain, there are now half as many children killed every year in road accidents as there were in 1922 - despite a more than 25-fold increase in traffic.
What they didn't include was the complete quote from here:
In Britain there are now half as many children killed every year in road accidents as there were in 1922, despite a more than 25-fold increase in traffic. The explanation for this decrease in children's road accident fatalities is not, as some would maintain, that roads have become safer but that they have become so dangerous that children have been progressively withdrawn from them.
So I would say that parents have taught their kids not to run into the road, mainly by not letting them near the road in the first place. The public highway has become too dangerous for half the public to use.

Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

I am all for the lowering of speed limits by schools. The point that gets me is the opposition to 4x4's on the basis that they cause more damage when in an accident. Does that mean we are also against trucks, transits, SUV's etc because of their size? They also pump out justy as much CO2 as a 4x4 and hurt just as bad when hit by one...

This morning while I was dropping off my son, on the way out I passed aa mum who was dropping off her daughter and who was complaining about the traffic at the school. She had a brand new Range Rover (and a cracking set of norks I might add - bit nippy out this moring, if you know what I mean. She was obviously running late as she had dispensed with the bra)

          Looking forward to 3pm now!
Rule Number 1 - Assuming that you have a valid contract in place always try to get your poo onto your timesheet, provided that the timesheet is valid for your current contract and covers the period of time that you are billing for.

          I preferred version 1!

Vans and trucks are a necessity that we have to put up with, Land Rovers doing the school run are not.

shouldn't you have been paying attention to the traffic and irresponsible pedestrians ?

Everyone so far has forgotten to mention how heavier people contribute to braking distances... let's tax the f$£ b"$t"%D's

as VAT is payable on all their takeaways, and their petrol consumtion is much higher, then I guess to a certain extent they already are.

She may have been doing something later that required the use of said LR. Why do we always assume that a woman driving a LR or 4x4 is doing the school run? Do we then start criticising owners of estate cars and ask why they need that for the school run?

I am generalising I know, but come on are you saying that every women who does the school run in a LR is going dirt tracking in the afternoon??!!

I don't have a problem with estate cars, the sensible option if you ask me.
