Have you been consulting wikipedia? A Yuppie or a Dinkie was not a Chav, quite the opposite. The 80s version of chav was a Kevin and Trace, council house dwellers, they drove a Ford Escort with a sunstrip displaying their names.
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

Sorry - I wasnt clear. In the 80s, people gave labels (Yuppie, etc) to the career types in society, and Kevin/Tracey was the lower class stereotype. But I don't remember them as having the violent/anti-social image which is the benchmark of today's chav?
Oh, I’m sorry….I seem to be lost. I was looking for the sane side of town. I’d ask you for directions, but I have a feeling you’ve never been there and I’d be wasting my time.

No problem, it's probably becuase the underclass wasn't so big in those days. The chav equivalent were those who lived in council houses.

                      I thought CHAV stood for:

                      Council
                      House
                      And
                      Violence
