Oh well, 1 out of 2 is not bad.

Personall I think it is out of order. It is misrepresentation, even if accidental, and is not excused by any vile immorality that the poster might have displayed (possible liability more likely).

Of course I'm just griping, and you have more important things to do than consider the ethics of your own actions. I don't subscribe to the poster's point of view (you can't accuse someone who bought a shrink-wrapped copy of windows ME with his own money of being unwilling to give money to software developers ) but I do think that there is a widely agreed netiquette, and that taking care to identify who posted what is long-regarded as an essential to boards and groups. Not to care about that reflects very seriously on the question of whose board this is. A real question since like all Web 2.0 it depends critically on the contributions of users who generally regard it affectionately as "ours". I am becoming less convinced of that in connection with this site.

That's a trap, I confess. You tell me that if I don't like it I don't need to come here, and that proves my point in one.

Edit: I repeat, I don't agree with the poster. I question the action to remove the post, not its removal.

ec - your points are largely valid and have been raised and addressed several times in the past. you appear to be a relative newcomer. i did think that the comments i left in the moderated threads evinced clear explanation. note also that **normally**, editing a thread will by default leave a footprint of the editor's sig. i always maintain that the posters on the board have probably greater ownership of the board than i - i am simply a humble mod, but one who is extremely busy on other things. so forgive me if i do not append the odd paragraph to explain each moderation but you can safely assume that i do have all our best interests at heart

I think some of us are missing the point here.

The whole point and purpose of "moderation" is to ensure that posts (which breach the site's rules and regulations) are either deleted or "toned down" so that they do fall within the guidelines for whatever constitutues as the site's rules and regulations for posting.

I like to think of moderation as "removing the obscene graffiti" and contentious content that is liable to cause offence and get the poster and the site owners in trouble.

If there was no moderation, there would eventually be no site.

Sure...Freedom of Speech and all that, but with Freedoms come Responsibilities. As outlined by the site's T's & C's.

So let's not bash Scotspine for doing a largely unthanked task, and assume he is the enemy for moderating the more offensive posts.

He's doing us a favour, because sometimes we do overstep the mark, and if it wasn't for his moderation, we'd have no site at all.

Have a nice weekend everyone !
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
