Working in surgeries day in day out, and aware of their patient booking systems, I'll have to say that each surgery has a number of embargoed slots every day.
If you can convince the receptionist-cum-dragon that you do have a clear clinical need, then I daresay they can assist.
However there is a fine line, and if it's that urgent, you need to think about A&E.
One of my surgeries posts on the noticeboard the number of DNA's they have each month (Did Not Attend)
Total Appointments for June 2007 : 1150
Total DNA's for June 2007 : 257
...and that's one of the lowest I have seen for a long time...normally about 350-400 a month.
