No, it would be cheaper to have a welfare system that forces people to take any available job. That way there wouldn't be a load of low paid jobs available for any willing Pole (Bulgarian, Romanian) to come and do.

But it seems that this approach is political unacceptable.

The shortage of housing is caused by crap planning. End of.

Round where I live there are so many brown field sites that could be developed its untrue - instead developers prefer green field sites as instead of 1 and 2 bedroom flats they would prefer to build 5 - 6 bedroom houses that they can sell for a lot more.

Until the government starts forcing developers to use brown field sites and stop adding the word "luxury" to a development so they can add £30,000 to the price the better. I don't want a whirlpool bath and massivly overcomplex kitchen...4 walls and a roof will do.

Why would they not be the 'the fruits of your labours'?

It's true that having cash does open more doors... but what are the impediments to aquiring cash?

A level of education is free for all in this country, as is healthcare.

The planning system is working in my neck of the woods, the last few brownfield sites are all getting a high proportion of flats. The developers have been knocked back for any more 4 and 5 bed estates , its high density or nothing. The locals who campaigned against the big houses are now regretting it as they are getting 4 times the number of dwellings, more cars, etc etc

You are much more likely to become victim of some nasty socially aquired disease as a poor person.

University (the preferred route to a higher standard of living in this country) is no longer free, and you are much less likely to acheive higher grades as a poor person.

What you are saying may well have been true 10 years ago but I don't think it is today.

Is it beyond the capabilities of students to actually work to put themselves through Uni?

No, but the chance of them acheiving the same grades as somebody who doesn't have to work are less.
