That is not true. The education system may be technically free but in reality you pay more or less according to the standard of education that you want for your children.

In other words we do not live in a meritocracy at all, we live according to where and to whom we were born.

I disagree, you are granted a basic level of education by the State - i.e. you should be able to read, write & calculate,these are the basic building blocks for anyone to succeed in the adult world.

What ought to be happening is that society should be governed according to aspirations in order that all people are given a very good education and then told to make of life what they will.

As far as I am aware there are no impediments (and please point out any you are aware of) of people being allowed to be as successful as their natural talents allow - i.e. a meritocracy

That's broadly true, isn't it?

It is also true that the circumstances that a person is born and brought up in obviously have a large bearing.

However that cannot be avoided unless you treat your population like battery hens, and to do that you've need something very different to a meritocracy.

Same here - for totally selfish reasons as well! I'm only over here because we wanted to move out of London and couldn't agree on somewhere in Britain. I was for Scotland and my other half was for the Isle of Wight. I don't want to go back to that debate
