There was a programme on C4 last night about compulsive hoarders.

Although not relevant to your situation, I have included the link to the programme page on the C4 website as there are some sources of information to do with OCD in general which may prove useful.

Best of luck with it - feel free to let us know how it goes.

a 16 year old relative, very intelligent, very clever, very confident, has in the last 4 months developed symptoms of some kind of obsessive compulsive disorder.

        Symptoms are things like:

. if he has to leave the house at 07:20 to go to school and it becomes 07:21 before he leaves then he will not leave as he says he is too late

. putting clothes on and twenty minutes later saying they are dirty and putting them in the washing machine

. saying that food is possessed and refusing to eat it

        . etc

Reading and advice from doctor's has suggested it is caused by a hormone which is released at this age (he's 16) and it has been suggested that he does not have enough of the hormone.

Does anyone know anything about this kind of condition, and where to seek private treatment for it ?

It is such a shame to see such an intelligent, talented young person (makes me feel old saying that, but it's true) missing out on his true potential because of this condition which has come from nowhere.

I put the question here because we have a massive range of people with a massive range of experiences and maybe somebody can give a hint on where to seek private help/treatment to find the cause and cure for this young man.

Please treat this question with the respect it deserves, this is not a joke and deadly serious. This means, for the hard of hearing, if you ain't got a clue keep your trap shut.

        Thanks all,

        Milan.
When I was around the same age (15) I also developed OCD, this was at a time when OCD wasnt heard of, only now looking back did I realise what I had. I developed a thing for cleaness washing hands etc. I didnt see a doctor, no treatment or anything I just seemed to grow out of it. At 16 hope its just a phase that he will grow out of.

The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

Feck me. This has got me thinking back to when I was that age.

I can vaguely remember having a penchant for counting upto 10.

No given reason and at any time.

Thank fck I wasn't doing it out loud.

Fortunately, it stopped of it's own accord.

OK, OK - hand washing to the bone trumps constantly counting to 10 in your head!

Some seem to be taking this seriously. Thinking food is possessed and refusing to eat it??? Either this a beans wind up or that is not obsessive compulsive disorder but something rather more serious.

On the former assumption, I find when my cheese is possessed by evil spirits drawing a pentagram around it helps. Either that or cast it out into the lettice. With the right incantations spirits can be continually moved on until they eventually end up in the past its sell by date yoghhurt that you always end up throwing out anyway.
