Good reason for it. One magpie on its lonesome is generally a sign that there is something wrong with the locality. They're scavengers and if there's nothing for them to eat then things are real bad...Insanity: repeating the same actions, but expecting different results.

Bloody hell! Mrs W. salutes magpies too, (doesn't call them "Sir" though).Originally posted by meridianMy missus salutes magpies and says "Hi Sir" whenever she sees a lone one. More than one, or two people seeing one, is fine apparently. Tch, some people....
Aparently a lone one is bad luck as per the old "Magpie" TV theme tune; "one for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy, five for silver, six for gold, seven for a secret never to be told . . . Ma . . a . . a . . ag . . pie".
Ahem, alledgedly.

Thanks.. my mother always used to greet a solitary magpie with a "good morning Mr Magpie, where is Mrs Magpie today"Originally posted by meridianNelson - one leg, one eye, one ball or something like that.
111 in cricket is considered bad luck to loads of cricketers, something to do with the number looking like wickets without bails, apparently. They all sit about in the sheds with their feet off the floor until the next run is scored, don't ask me why.
