A car has been driven into a crowd of people with one dead and at least 30 injured.

The vehicle crashed outside a department store in Rankestrasse in Charlottenburg, Berlin, Germany.

No further information about the perpetrator was immediately available.

One image said to be from the scene shows piles of chairs and tables destroyed in the crash.

German police have confirmed the suspect is now in custody.

It's still unclear whether the crash was an intentional act of a traffic accident.

German police confirmed the suspect is male.

They told Tages Spiegel: "We do not yet know whether it was an intentional act or a traffic accident.
