Babies and young toddlers don't have a concept of gender and sex. Babies don't even know they are separate individuals for the first few months and only at around 18 months do they realise that other people have different thoughts to them.

More interesting would be where does a sense of gender lie in the order of development, as sense of self emerges? Is it one of the first things or one of the last key components of identity?

Though you must know/have met children up to the age of 8 who decide whether someone is a boy or girl, man or woman by what they wear, hair style etc.
