Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
Very expensive but not my cup of tea (ho-ho). Somewhat overrated I would say. The Union Natural Spirit Blend is an acceptable compromise of price and quality.
Best cappuccino etc: Bar Italia, Frith Street, Soho. For those who work nearby or go into the west end in the evenings/weekends. Opened just after the war, apparently, and still use the same [very] old steamer! They don't go in for all those trendy variations you hear coming out of Starbucks. Plus you don't have to pay for an extra shot of coffee if you want it stronger. Just ask.
Out of all the chains... AMT at train stations. Never had a bad one, reasonable price, sensible size and 100% fairtrade. None of that thinking "well for another 30p I can get..." and having a huge cup you don't really want...
Wetherspoons shortly before last orders back when they had a special offer for a coffee + muffin all day. Nice break from alcohol and the bemusement of everyone else / panic of the poor person on the till which only seemed to have a button for vodka + Red Bull or Fosters was pretty entertaining
A vending machine in Milano should also get a mention...coffee wasn't amazing but *so much better* than the ones we have over here... when I mentioned it to my collegues they sounded fairly serious when telling me they'd probably go on strike if it wasn't good enough
I've actually considerred it strangely enough - unfortunately I dont think the fine people of Sunderland could afford Starbucks prices. They have pasties and booze to pay for after all.
Are you really from Brighton Craig? I'm there on the 16th for a hen weekend.
Anywhere you recommend?
