Hostile state actors – spies, assassins or hackers directed by the government of another country – are to be targeted by refreshed espionage and treason laws, the home secretary has announced.

In a speech to security officials in central London, Sajid Javid revealed plans to publish a new espionage bill to tackle increased hostile state activity from countries including but not limited to Russia.

Javid said officials would also examine treason laws to see whether the legislation could be updated to include British nationals who operate on behalf of a hostile nation.

Someone's going to be busy rounding people up - if by 'operate on behalf of' they mean challenge the party line and quote alternative news sources.

Book I'm reading at the moment is all about Dmitri Shostakovitch trying to survive in Stalin's USSR. Starts with him taking a suitcase to go and wait by the lift in his appartment block so that when 'power' comes to get him they don't come into his flat and upset this family. All because of an opera he wrote and how it was interpreted by the powers that be. He waits by the lift every night.

Fascinating stuff and absolutely terrifying. Lucky we live in a civilized country with freedom of speech and all that... oh hang on...

People who like freedom of speech (like myself) should be defending countries that support freedom of speech, rather than hostile fascist regimes like Russia where there is no freedom of speech (people go to jail there for wrong retweet and like).
