Yes, I have a reason. I'm playing devil's advocate here, but it is a serious point.

How does it help the long-term prospects of the world to support, and thereby expand, the population in lands that clearly cannot sustain it?

    This is false humanity.

No, our sandwich will not help, agreed with you but, obviously, I don't agree with milan either. The situation doesn't have to be designed for this. There are lots of macroeconomic actions that can be done by the richest government (debt cancellation, free trade and so on...), none of this initiative is never mentioned. The real purpose of this kind of charity is just to make people's conscience clear so they don't go and ask the government any serious action. Same for recycling, I have the house full of cans, bottles, paper, all spread out in a big mess. What's the point of it? Is it going to make a difference? Yes, it makes people's conscience clear of having done their bit for the environment. No, you didn't. There are many more serious initiatives that can be done for the environment on a more serious level by government and big corporations, and that's what we should ask for. Not to be fooled around thinking that we can solve alone world's problems by separating cans and bottles.
I've seen much of the rest of the world. It is brutal and cruel and dark, Rome is the light.

But isn't the nub of the problem the expanding populations in these parts of the world?

Free trade will help countries that can already sustain themselves.

But for those that can't, aid just helps them expand even further beyond their resources - more people are born into hardship, and they either die or flood into other countries. In 30 years they will have flooded Europe, in 50 they will have flooded everywhere else. After that the world will be an overcrowded nightmare.

Yes but I wasn't talking about aid. You help them develop with fairness. But you can help them. Many third world countries have done miracles in the last years so you can't really say that it doesn't work.

Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day.

Teach a man to fish, and he'll spend the household budget on fishing tackle and a boat.
Behold the warranty -- the bold print giveth and the fine print taketh away.

Eating for a day gives him enough time to sire two more, and all of a sudden they need three fish.
