It was Putin alright, and he's had exactly the reaction he wanted from naive May, Johnson, & co, who on this occasion should have "gone away and shut up" until after the Russian election!
Yes, killing an ex-spy blatantly with a substance known to have been first developed in Russia could have been just to discourage any others from turning.
But why a spy who had been released and was a has been, and why also target his daughter, and why so close to the Russian presidential election?
I reckon it was to provoke a storm of criticism and countermeasures, which is exactly what he achieved, to make the Russian people feel beleagured and look to Putin as their staunch defender.
Yes, everyone assumes he'll win the election anyway, by fair means or foul.
But a bit more genuine support never hurts, especially if polls and advisors were telling him his win could not be guaranteed or might not be as decisive as he would like.
