When I was growing up, we were all made to wash our hands before each meal.
Even at first school, we were made to line up outside the canteen with our arms outstretched in front of us, palms up, to make sure we had clean hands.

Good hygiene was drilled into us.
Food hygiene courses do teach that. Alot of places have hand washing instructions. And alcohol gel. You are advised to wash/gel if you touch anything - especially your face or currency. Or if you sneeze.
