Certainly the unemployed, as we know, have been cooked off the books for decades in various ways. By altering the definition of what an unemployed or disabled person is you can therefore show a massive increase of decrease on a graph.

I'm no Blair-apologist. If you come to me with a new ferrari on hire purchase and a massive mortgage, before 2007, I say you're an idiot living on borrowed time. Major made mistakes too. But an aim of resolution or achievable state of the country isn't based by simply comparing party colours, as with football teams, forever more.

Rather than focus on the past, perhaps we really need a new view for the route onwards for the country? A good start would be disallowing changes to definition of disabled and unemployed people. Unemployed people aren't in work but wish to be in work. Not all unemployed people (as per this forum), even upon shutting down a limited company, would register as unemployed.
Do you really believe 20% of 59 year olds and 25% of 64 year olds need to be on means tested disability benefit?

It had to be tightened up.

Official figures say disability is 0.5% £60m.

Remember these benefits automatically give access to other benefits so a disability benefit means you get housing & motability.

You have to be realistic. These people are unemployable so shoving them on disability benefit means the job centre can ignore them.

Until you change the attitudes in society so that 59 year olds with limited skills can be employed, what do you want done with them?

That's quite a powerful argument you have there.

            that be true.

If only we could have a shortage of workers so employers become desperate enough to hire & retrain older people?

Agreed. If all of these people were taken off disability benefit, would the jobs magically appear for them?

Funny thing is there are employers who want older people e.g. in retail, customer service but they don't want these people as they aren't presentable to the public or other businesses.

I remember a friend of mine asking why a particular skilled job only had a few GCSEs as the education requirements, and I pointed out to her that older workers will have the skills and experience but not the paper qualifications.
