Stalin was worse. The reason this country is a lot better is because people did not keep their mouth shut when criticizing the Govt, it's totally essential to democracy to keep the scumbags in Govt on their toes.

The intention of Fixed Parliaments was to prevent exactly such convenient "snap" elections when the ruling party doing well in polls, totally wrong on that principle for Labour/LibDems to vote for it tomorrow.Comment

The FTPA was always a publicity stunt, intended to provide some degree of market confidence in the early days of the Coalition, which was, of course, unprecedented territory for our FPTP Parliamentary democracy. The fixed term parliament thing was a bone for the Libdems, to convince them that the Tories were not going to cast them aside at the first opportunity. They were also given the concession of a vote on changing the voting system. The electorate binned that idea, thankfully.Originally posted by AtW View PostThe intention of Fixed Parliaments was to prevent exactly such convenient "snap" elections when the ruling party doing well in polls, totally wrong on that principle for Labour/LibDems to vote for it tomorrow. His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain...Comment
