I was in Financial Services for 11 years, took a 9 month role in retail, rolling out a new EPOS system - trying to a get a gig immediately after that was challenging - the recruiters seem to think in 9 months, any Financial Services knowledge would have disappeared!

Nah you were just up against people who had been continually in FS and have the same skill set as you.
If you are doing the latest and greatest stuff they don't care what industry sector you were in and moved from.
