Remember most Atheists and agnostics think creating the world in 7 days , original sin = Limbo & God working in mysterious ways are totally ridiculous.
Well most believers don't believe the first one, or the second one. And I'd probably argue most people, including a lot of agnostics, DO believe that things happen for a reason even if they'd be quick to deride the idea of a supernatural force. Those who truly believe everything is totally without greater meaning and things just happen are probably in the minority, if only because the yearning for meaning seems to be a biological feature.

But let's not divert the thread... start a new one if either of us really wants to debate it today

I'd probably call myself an atheist, but would never look down on those who hold however ridiculous a belief in their sky fairy of choice. Who knows, some of them may be actually right.
As Voltaire said (allegedly) on his deathbed, when invited to renounce Satan: "Now, now my good man, this is no time to be making enemies."
