Environment dependant obviously. I've found in IB's it's usually part and parcel to go in with a bit of arrogance, because people respond positively to that. It's playground politics.. you find the strong people in the area and talk yourself up with the others.

It happens with perms too.. It has nothing to do with contracting and everything about corporate culture. Perhaps you're not a good fit for your job?

Not sure I agree, but each to their own.

Having never worked within an IB environment, I find the idea of that culture pretty repulsive.

It happens far more with contractors. Especially those who rush in, declaring they're here to save the day as is happening currently. I'd far rather deliver quietly, in a smug fashion.
Practically perfect in every way....there's a time and (more importantly) a place for malarkey.

Correct. IB's only like that for certain people. You're there to solve a particular problem, not single-handedly deliver a 20% increase in the corporate share price! You need to be confident and assured, naturally but I find arrogance to be an odious quality, especially when said person cannot actually back it up with delivery.

You know I've not worked many contractors like that at all. Generally they have been ok and fairly good at what they do. I've had a couple of exceptions, the nutter, who was just nuts and a toxic contractor. The toxic contractor was the worst, even when it was his problem and I gave up time on my work to help with his problem he would still send out emails saying I was holding up his project for not fixing his problem. He was a genius at making excuses and blaming people!

Actually now that I think about it, yeah contractors are the effin worst.

Depends on which IB, which team etc. not so clear cut.

People mainly seem to have trouble with BarCap as far as I know, certainly more than others.

Well you don't want to start off by setting unreasonable expectations, do you now...?

I did once work with you, remember...

It depends, if the project is going to hell in a handcart and you have been brought into turn things round, yes, go in hard as that is what you are there for. If you are joining a well established mature team then quietly asses your surroundings and look to show where you will be complementing the existing skills and knowledge of the team.

You may be good at your job, but if you can't do the other aspects like knowing your enviornment you are not going to make it as a contractor for very long

You are not a contractor. I guess.

I can't work out why so many contractors start a new role in this way. Perhaps it's because I'm not in a 'techy' environment - these people are generally project managers who will personally achieve very little so are already setting out their stalls.

I prefer a more cautious approach to my first few weeks in any new role - I like to assess the lay of the land before I come out of my shell.

Perhaps I should try the gobby approach like you lot probably do...
