Bureaux de change offering €0.99 for £1

For the first time in at least three years, British holidaymakers have found that a pound buys less than a euro at some bureaux de change.

On Tuesday this week, exchange desks at two airports were offering just 99 euro cents for a pound, according to foreign currency specialists Caxton FX.

MoneyCorp at Stansted was offering €0.9915, while ICE's rate at Luton was €0.990.

Is that sterling or the Luton pound?

Anyone changing their money at an airport must be desperate. Buy as few as possible and use an atm at the other end.

A quick look at one travel money vendor (The Post Of Fice), they're offering €1.1311 per £1 (or €1.1339 per £1 if spending more than £500).

That some airport based travel money shops have decided to offer about 15% less is their business model. People who decide to buy their money at airport money kiosks deserve the ripping off they get.

Tesco are doing travel money at €1.1333 per £1, Debenhams are offering at €1.138, and apparently using a Halifax Clarity Card would be at €1.16.

So yeah, not as good as the €1.30(ish) you could get back in May, but €0.99 is a bit misleading.
