Every pound of EU funding to undergo 'national interest' test to ensure it benefits Britain


Every pound of European Union funding will undergo a "national interest” test to see whether it should continue in the wake of Brexit, a Cabinet minister has said in a letter.

David Gauke, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, said that Britain will only match EU funding after the country leaves the bloc if it can be proved to benefit the nation.

It comes after Philip Hammond, the Chancellor, pledged that farmers, universities and some of the nation's poorest regions will continue to receive billions of pounds worth of subsidies after Britain leaves the EU.

Mr Hammond said he wants to give people "reassurance... stability and certainty" by honouring EU funding worth more than £4billion a year.

The money to continue subsidising farmers and universities will come from Britain’s £8.5billion net contribution to the EU, which it will cease to pay upon its exit from the EU.

I can't stand this negativity.
No, the NHS is not going to get an extra £350 mln per week.
In fact existing funding will have to be cut once the tax take starts falling.
Which makes the country strong again as people learn not to see the doctor and grow tough like we were in the 19th Century.
Roll back the welfare state and make Britain great again!

Given most of them are empty - save the M50 - I'd say fund. It's a very nice drive from Rosslare to Belfast. Lovely shiny new roads (obligatory EU signs in place of course) with very few cars in sight.
