General rule of thumb - hourly contractor rate × 1000 = permanent equivalent. Very rough calculation and obviously a number of factors to consider.

          Yep.

Person A, studies hard, gets A levels in technical subject, goes to Uni, studies hard and get Comp Sci degree, works hard, works up the IT ladder, salary £50K, stressed to the the eyeballs.

Person B, flunks school, becomes plumber/brickie/spark. Down the pub every night, works when they feel like it, £200+ per day.

Why anyone bothers now is way beyond my understanding...

          **** IT

Agent I spoke to said they have 50 well educated, experienced contractors for each vacancy now, but pretty much no one wants the perm jobs at £40K, which is what the senior roles are paying now, as getting someone in on a work permit takes 5 minutes.

Add in the fact i refuse to work in london and that`s me out the game , like you said IT is now stress nothing else .
i worked in one big office with helpdesk monkey one end , project managers the other end ,infrastructure 3rd line , Dba`s, IT managers, system designers and all the other gubbins.

all getting pummeled for results from the trickle down masters , add in ITIL Prince sla kpi`s and all that other crud and you have a big soup of stress and job protection.
