I have looked at the XE and it's the new model XF I'm looking at. I just prefer something a bit bigger, hence going for the 520 and not a 320.

I've got the exact model of Jag you're looking at on a 14 plate. Pleasure to drive, plenty of functionality. Not as much fun as my Porsche was but a more complete car to drive. Had a 12 plate C class and that was nice too, but surely an E220 is a better comparison to the 5 series and XF? C class is XE and 320d competition. Test drove an E class and wish I'd got it instead of the C class with hindsight.

Why not the E class? Not as fun to drive as the 520 but better built.

Not comparing like with like, Mercedes introduced new models recently and these always have teething difficulties.
Previous models C and E are very solid.
Always better to buy a model just before the new one comes out - although I broke my own rule recently.

Any particular reason for the Beemer?

I've known permies use their rear wheel driven beemer as an excuse for not coming into work due to 1 mm of snow on their drive. So can help when you fancy a bit of WFH.

Though the only snow we seem to get down south these days is when the postman has a bad case of dandruff.

Off topic but I recommend buying an ex demo. You get a car < 1 year old, 1000 miles on the clock, with a 20 or 30% price reduction.

I had a C250 CDI sport I loved it, yeah it's not the best car for throwing around country lanes but as a car to be swished around it was excellent. Seats super comfortable all the toys you need as standard (options on many cars). Had the optional 7 speed auto which was v responsive in sport mode.
0-60 sub 7 seconds, real world 50mpg on long runs even when some fun was had. Around the town late 30s. No ownership issues and customer service was first class. Would have another.
