I was making an idealogical point (too cryptically, my fault) about the dangers and ignorance of voter apathy and the propensity for slow, systematic dismantling of the democratic system.

A similar event occurred when the Nazi Party came to power in Germany by democratic means, although after acquiring power they eliminated (in this case by murder) most vestiges of Germany's democratic system, including the abillity to vote.

They then went to spread the National Socialist Party good news around Europe where appeasement from other countries failed to stop its advancement initially.

Whereas we have the choice whether to vote or not, only wisdom shows that by choosing not to vote that we increase the risk of the above.

Agree with spacecadet. As for letting in Labour I can't at the moment see that a Cameron led government would be any improvement. The blithering Cameron says we should save energy. Do it by not bothering to vote. Unless UKIP are standing anyway, they are what the Toreis ought to be.

I doubt a Nazi like party will be in contention for power at the next general election so i'll take that risk

Xogg - this has been raised a few times: conventional conservative policies are unlikely to win the next general election as shown in the last because of the knee jerk stuff liebour have indoctrined into the electorate:

Tax cuts = cuts in NHS and nurses = bad old Tories

          Immigration controls = racist Tories

          etc

Cameron is trying to reclaim the centre ground, appeal to swing voters and let liebour naturally fall in popularity as their chickens come home to roost. If they win then it is inevitable that the traditional Tory values will kick in.

            LOL! No, I meant:

"...slow, systematic dismantling of the democratic system..."

Why don't you take your GCSE history at the same time!

WWI may not have been a fight about democracy but in the 900+ years before it a number of wars and battles were fought over it. Including the invasion of this country by the Saxon's since the concept of people voting a leader comes directly from them!

There are some uncomfortable aspects to Islam (especially the Wahabi form). I particularly dislike the interpretation which says a woman who is raped is guilty of adultary. This was the case in Northern Nigeria, or the more recent case in Pakistan (IIRC) of the British man condemned to death by an eclesiastical court for murder when he is sexually assaulted by the 'victim'.

The debate on veils recently has in it's roots the treatment of women by Islam, which I find at odds with the core value(s) of this country.

While this country has a core set of values, drawn from the many immigrants throughout the last two millenia, we should not undermine those selfsame values for those who join this country now. This is a problem that has it's roots on the increase of immigration way above the commumnities abilities to absorb them under New Labour.

I prefer to think my history 'O' level was awarded based on historical fact, not opinion...misguided or otherwise. Anyway, history is a thing of the past. We can't keep drawing on learning from our mistakes! Ban religion, ban the Tories and make beer tax free....

xog, there's an old Edlesborough proverb:

"If you want to hit someone over the back of the head with an axe, you've got to creep up behind them first."

I thought you of all people would understand that.

WTF do you think NL are !!! They're just a little more subtle about how they go about eroding the rights we've enjoyed for the last 7-800 years in this country.

As an aside, I'm sure I remember an article in the paper about 6 months ago which had Gordon Brown proposing a national youth organisation,to include the various military cadet forces, designed to teach our young people about their social responsibilities as members of British society, and to instil in them a sense of national pride, and I thought to myself "Is he seriously proposing that we set up a uniformed, National, Socialist paramilitary youth organisation - what's he going to call them, the Brown-shirts?"
