Neither. mrs-bp has four cats. You don't own a cat. They own you. They only time they ever show any gratitude is bringing in live creatures - rats are a favourite - and presenting them to you.
Maine coons are lovely, very friendly (for cats) but they are extremely hairy and shed like mad in summer. They're also a lot more attention seeking than other cats. Unless you can deal with the hair, and very high need for jumping around and killing things (even for a cat), I'd go for something like a Siamese or british shorthair. Albeit, maine coons are excellent hunters (again, even by cat standards) if that is important to you.
Maine coons are hard work, and if you let them outdoors are magnets for pikeys to steal, so keep them as indoor cats

Get a moggie crossbreed kitten from cat rescue. They have better temperaments, live longer and are less susceptible to disease. Plus you are giving an unwanted cat a home.
I speak from experience. Persians especially are a health nightmare and Maine Coons a status symbol.
